Shakespeare's Warwickshire

No writer has shaped the English language more profoundly than William Shakespeare and we’re proud that he was born here, educated here, married here and buried here. The landscapes he grew up in - the Forest of Arden, the River Avon, the market towns and quiet villages of the county - fed directly into the plays that have been performed continuously for four centuries and translated into every major language on earth. Phrases he coined are still in daily use. Characters he invented feel like people we know. Some of the worlds he imagined were rooted in the fields and streets of Warwickshire.

Stratford is the natural starting point - the town where it all began, where the Shakespeare Birthplace Trust cares for the houses, gardens and archives that tell his story most directly, and where the Royal Shakespeare Company stages his work on the banks of the Avon throughout the year. But Shakespeare's Warwickshire extends well beyond the town. The county that shaped his imagination is still recognisable in the landscape, the legends and the literary connections that run through it.

The Shakespeare Birthplace Trust cares for the five Shakespeare houses in and around Stratford - Shakespeare's Birthplace, Anne Hathaway's Cottage, Nash's House and New Place, Mary Arden's Farm and Hall's Croft. Joint tickets are available and valid for 12 months. Check the Trust's website for current opening times before visiting, as some properties have restricted hours.
